Over 100,000 landscape heightmaps have been downloaded from this website.

Some time ago I was learning how to create landscape heightmaps, for this I mainly use Gaea, but I have also used Photoshop and I have tried a couple of other programs as well. During my learning I created several heightmaps that I was really happy with, but outside of learning didn’t have an intended use.

So I decided to give away a few of these for free. That meant they have gone to good use and also I have provided some assets back to the 3D CG community.

At the time I put these online they were barely any free landscape heightmaps available for download. Which felt like landscape heightmaps were being left out in the cold, so I created a page for them and put them online. However, I didn’t expect to get the type of engagement that I have gotten.

To date there has been well over 100,000 downloads of these heightmaps from the landscape heightmap page alone. It shows that there was a need for these heightmaps and I am glad I have been able to provide these to some many people.

A very high resolution map at 16k. To run this effectively does require a fairly powerful PC. But does provide additional detail you don’t get with lower resolutions.
