Texture Sizes for Video Games – Quick Reference Chart

The chart below provides an overview of the most common texture sizes that are used in video games.

Please note, that for MIP mapping, textures have to be the power of two e.g. 1×1, 2×2, 512×512, 2048×2048 4096×4096 (if not then they don’t create mipmaps).

Please also note that rectangle combinations are okay – for example: 16×4096 and so on. All the sides of a square or rectangle should though align to the power of 2 as this again allows for MIP mapping and this provides improved performance and anti-aliasing. For instance, 256×1024 would adhere to this criteria, but a square texture like 800×800 would not be suitable.

Also note that NPOT textures (not to the power of two) will likely work well with any modern GPU as they can be easily handled, but these common power of 2 texture sizes are the most common and also help provide a standardised texture size across industry.

Abbreviation Size
1k 1024×1024
2k 2048×2048
4k 4096×4096
8k 8192×8192
16k 16384 x 16384
32k 32768 x 32768
