Why Do Cartoon Characters Wear Gloves?

Whilst watching some short docs on animation the other day I came across this very interesting and insightful video from Vox. Why do cartoon characters where gloves? I will give a hint in that its a time save, but I would also recommend watching the video if your interesting in this kind of thing.
